Further afield
Caminha and Vila Nova de Cerveira are about a twenty minute drive over the mountains. Both historical towns are on the river Minho which is the border between Portugal and Spain (Galicia). In these towns you will find a traditional weekly market where you can buy a wide range of local fresh produce, and handicrafts not forgetting good quality clothing at bargain basement prices. Vila Nova Cerveira is also a centre for art and culture.
After the rigours of visiting the markets you can relax at one of the plentiful cafés and restaurants which will suit all pockets.
This area of Portugal and neighbouring Galicia is well known for its superb seafood. Possible day trips include Santiago de Compostela (Galicia), the Peneda - Gerês national park (where wolves still roam), Marvel at the religious architecture of Braga the capital of the Minho or even the Port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia which are about one and half hours drive to the south. If you visit during summer months you are likely to experience the colour and excitement of a festa in honour of the local saint.
